తెలుగు, భారత దేశంలో ఎక్కువగా మాట్లాడే ద్రవిడ భాష. ఆంధ్ర ప్రదేశ్ రాష్ట్ర రాజ భాష. "త్రిలింగ" పదము నుంచి "తెలుగు" పదం వెలువడిందని అంటారు. తేనె వంటిది కనుక "తెనుగు" అనాలని కొందరు అంటారు.

క్రీస్తు పూర్వం 200 నాటి శిధిలాలలొ తెలుగు భాష ఉండటంబట్టి ఈ భాష ప్రాచీనత మనకి తెలుస్తుంది.[1]



ఏమైనా తెలుగుభాష మూలాన్వేషణకు సంతృప్తికరమైన, నిర్ణయాత్మకమైన ఆధారాలు లేవు. అయినా కూడా, క్రీ.పూ. మొదటి శకంలో శాతవాహన రాజులు సృష్టించిన "గాధాసప్తశతి" అన్న మహారాష్ట్రీ ప్రాకృత్ పద్య సంకలనంలో తెలుగు పదాలు మొట్టమొదట కనిపించాయి. కాబట్టి, తెలుగు భాష మాట్లాడేవారు, శాతవాహన వంశపు రాజుల ఆగమనానికి ముందుగా కృష్ణ, గోదావరి నదుల మధ్య భూభాగంలో నివాసం ఉండే వారై ఉంటారని నిర్ణయించవచ్చు. తెలుగు భాష మూలపురుషులు యానాదులు. పురాతత్వ పరిశోధనల ప్రకారము తెలుగు భాష ప్రాచీనత 2,400 సంవత్సరాలనాటిది[2].


ఆదిమ ద్రావిడ భాషల చరిత్ర క్రీస్తుకు పూర్వం కొన్ని శతాబ్దాల వెనకకు మనము తెలుసుకోవచ్చు, కానీ తెలుగు చరిత్రను మనము క్రీస్తు శకం 6 వ శతాబ్దము నుండి ఉన్న ఆధారములను బట్టి నిర్ణయించవచ్చు. తెలుగు లోని స్పష్టమైన మొట్టమొదటి ప్రాచీన శిలాశాసనం 7వ శకం ఎ.డి. కి చెందినది. శాసనాలలో మనకు లభించిన తొలితెలుగు పదం 'నాగబు'. చక్కటి తెలుగు భాషా చరిత్రను మనము క్రీస్తు శకం 11 వ శతాబ్దం నుండి గ్రంథస్థము చేయబడినదిగా గమనించ వచ్చు.

ఆంధ్రులగురించి చెప్పిన పూర్వపు ప్రస్తావనలలో ఒకటి ఇక్కడ ఉదాహరింపబడినది: [3]

ఇది ఉద్యోతనుడు ప్రాకృతభాషలో రచించిన కువలయమాల కథలోనిది. ఈ ప్రాకృతానికి పంచాగ్నుల ఆదినారాయణ శాస్త్రి తెలుగు అనువాదం:

అందగత్తెలన్నా, అధవా యుద్ధరంగమన్ననూ సమానంగా ప్రేమిచే వాళ్ళున్నూ, అందమైన శరీరాలు గల వాళ్ళున్నూ. తిండిలో దిట్టలున్నూ, అయిన ఆంధ్రులు అటూ, పుటూ (పెట్టు కాబోలు), రటూ (రట్టు ఏమో) అనుకొంటూ వస్తుండగా చూచాడు.

కాళ్ళకూరు నారాయణరావు తన "ఆంధ్ర వాఙ్మయ చరిత్ర సంగ్రహము"లో ఈ యుగాన్ని క్రింది భాగాలుగా విభజించాడు.[4]

ఈ కాలంలో "ఆంధ్ర" అనే పదం మాత్రం కొద్ది ప్రస్తావనలలో ఉంటున్నది గాని "తెలుగు" అనే పదం ఎక్కడా లభించడంలేదు. అంతే కాకుండా ఆంధ్రుల జాతి గురించి ప్రస్తావించబడింది కాని భాష గురించి ఎలాంటి విషయం చెప్పబడలేదు. అయితే ఆంధ్రులు, తెలుగులు కలసిన ఫలితంగా ప్రస్తుత భాష రూపు దిద్దుకొన్నది గనుక "ఆంధ్ర దేశం" ప్రస్తావననే కొంత వరకు తెలుగు భాషకు చెందిన ప్రస్తావనగా భావిస్తున్నారు.


తెలుగు భాషకు తెలుగు, తెనుగు, ఆంధ్రము అనే మూడు పదాలున్నాయి. ఆంధ్రులు ఈ ప్రాంతాన్ని ఆక్రమించడానికి ముందు కృష్ణా గోదావరీ ప్రాంతం తెలుగు దేశమని పిలువబడేదని, ఆంధ్రుల పాలన తరువాత ఆంధ్ర దేశమయ్యిందనీ చరిత్రకారుల అభిప్రాయం. నన్నయభట్టు కాలం నాటికే తెలుగు, ఆంధ్రము అనే పేర్లు ఉన్నాయని నిదర్శనాలున్నాయి. తెలుగుభాష ద్రావిడ జన్యమా, లేక సంస్కృత ప్రాకృత జన్యమా అనే విషయంలో భిన్నాభిప్రాయాలున్నాయి. కాల్డ్‌వెల్ వంటివారి వాదన ప్రకారం తమిళ, మళయాళ, కన్నడ భాషలలాగా తెలుగు కూడా ద్రావిడ భాషా కుటుంబానికి చెందింది. క్రమంగా మిగిలినవానికి భిన్నంగా పరిణమించింది. చిలుకూరు నారాయణరావు వంటివారి అభిప్రాయం ప్రకారం తెలుగు భాష సంస్కృత ప్రాకృత జన్యం. ఏమైనా తెలుగు భాష తక్కిన (మాతృక) భాషలనుండి విడివడి ఏ దశలో పరిణమించిందో చెప్పడం సాధ్యం కావడంలేదు.[5]


మొట్ట మొదటిగా ఆంధ్రుల ప్రస్తావన క్రీ.పూ. 1500 - క్రీ.పూ. 800 మధ్య కాలంలోనిదిగా భావించబడుతున్న ఐతరేయ బ్రాహ్మణంలో ఉంది. ఇక్కడ ఆంధ్రులు శబర, మూతిబ, పుండ్ర, పుళింద జాతులతో కలిసి ఆర్యావర్తం దక్షిణాన నివశిస్తున్నట్లు అర్ధం చెప్పుకోవచ్చును. మహాభారతంలో ఆంధ్రులు కౌరవుల పక్షాన ఉన్నట్లు (ఆంధ్రాశ్చ బహవః) ఉన్నది. అయితే ఇది జాతికి చెందిన ప్రస్తావన మాత్రమే కనుక తెలుగు భాషకు సంబంధం లేకపోవచ్చును. నాగులు, ఆంధ్రులు, ద్రావిడులు, తెలుగులు, యక్షులు మరియు శబరులవంటి ఇతర వనవాస జాతులు కాలక్రమంలో వివిధ సంబంధాల ద్వారా, ప్రధానంగా భాషాపరంగా, కలసినందువలన ఆంధ్ర లేదా తెలుగు జాతి రూపుదిద్దుకొంది. మహాభారత యుద్ధానంతరం నెలకొన్న రాజకీయ కల్లోలం వలనా, మిడతల దండు కారణంగా ఏర్పడిన ఆహార లోపం వలనా క్రమంగా ఆంధ్రులు దక్షిణాపధానికి వలస వచ్చారు. యక్షులు భట్టిప్రోలు ప్రాంతంలో తూర్పు తీరాన ఉండేవారు. కళింగులు, తెలుగులు ఉత్తర తీరాంధ్రంలో వ్యవసాయం, ఇతర వృత్తులలో నిపుణులైన స్థిరనివాస జాతి. ద్రవిడులు రాయలసీమ ప్రాంతంలో ఉండేవారు.[6]


క్రీ.పూ. 6వ శతాబ్దంలో ఉద్భవించిన బౌద్ధ, జైన మతాలకు ఆరంభ కాలంనుండి ఈ దక్షిణాపధంలో అనన్యమయన ఆదరణ లభించింది. అయితే పెద్దయెత్తున ఔత్తరాహులు ఆంధ్రాపధంపై దండెత్తిన ఆధారాలు లేవు. కొద్దిపాటి ఘర్షణలు జరిగి ఉండవచ్చును. క్రీ.పూ. 300 నాటికే బౌద్ధం, జైనం ఆంధ్రాపధంలో అమితంగా ఆదరణ పొందాయి. ఆంధ్రులు యుద్ధ నిపుణులైనా గాని దండెత్తి వచ్చినవారుకారు. బ్రతుకు తెరువుకోసం వచ్చినవారు. అయితే అప్పటికే స్థిరనివాసం ఏర్పరచుకొన్న తెలుగుల భాష మరింత పరిపక్వత చెందిఉండాలి. కనుక తెలుగు భాష ఈ జాతుల ఏకీకరణకు మార్గం మరింత సుగమం చేసింది. రాజకీయ అధికారం ఆంధ్రులు సాధించినా భాష మాత్రం తెలుగే నిలిచింది[7]. ఈ నేపధ్యంలోనే ఆంధ్రజాతి, తెలుగు భాష రూపు దిద్దుకొన్నాయి. క్రీ.పూ. 500 - 400 - బౌద్ధ జాతక కధలలో ఆంధ్రాపధం (భీమసేన జాతకం) , ఆంధ్రనగరి (సెరివణిజ జాతకం) ప్రస్తావన ఉన్నది. భట్టిప్రోలు శాసనం ద్వారా క్రీ.పూ. 400 నాటికి కుబ్బీరుడు (యక్షరాజు) తీరాంధ్రంలో రాజ్యం చేస్తున్నాడు.


పింగళి లక్ష్మీకాంతం అభిప్రాయంలో - భాషనుబట్టి జాతికి పేరు రావడం చరిత్ర ధర్మం కాదు. జాతిని బట్టే భాషకు వారి భాషగా పేరు వస్తుంది. భాష, జాతి, సంస్కృతి అన్యోన్యాశ్రయములు. భాష పుట్టిన కొన్ని శతాబ్దాల తరువాత గాని ఆ భాషలో వాఙ్మయం పుట్టదు. [8] ఇలా చూస్తే క్రీ.శ. 1000 ప్రాంతంలో పరిణత సాహిత్యం ఆవిష్కరింపబడిన తెలుగు భాష అంతకు పూర్వం ఎన్నో శతాబ్దాలనుండి వ్యవహారంలో ఉండి ఉండాలి.


క్రీ.పూ. 3వ శతాబ్ధిలోనిదైన బుద్ధఘోషుని వినయపిటకం వ్యాఖ్యలో "అంధక అట్టకధ" ఆంధ్ర భాషలోనిదైతే అప్పటికే ఆంధ్ర భాష తక్కిన భాషలనుండి వేరుగా గుర్తింపబడి ఉండాలని భావిస్తున్నారు. క్రీ. పూ. (రెండవ శతాబ్దం?) వాడైన భరతుడు నాట్య శాస్త్రంలో బర్బర కిరాత ఆంధ్ర జాతుల భాషలకు బదులు శౌరసేనినిని ఉపయోగించాలని వ్రాశాడు. పై కారణాల వలన "ఆంధ్ర భాష" లేదా "తెలుగు భాష" క్రీ.పూ. నాటికి ప్రత్యేకమైన భాషగా ఏర్పడి ఉండాలని ఊహించడానికి వీలవుతుంది కాని ఇదమిత్థంగా చెప్పడం సాధ్యం కావడం లేదు.[5]


"తెలుగు భాష వయస్సెంత?" అనే వ్యాసంలో సురేష్ కొలిచాల క్రిందివిధంగా తెలుగు భాష ఎంత పాతదో నిర్ణయించే ప్రయత్నం చేశాడు [9]

తమిళంలో క్రీస్తు పూర్వం 3వ శతాబ్దం నుండీ సాహిత్యం లభిస్తోంది. తమిళం లోనూ కన్నడలోనూ తాలవ్యీకరణ (palatalization) లో వ్యత్యాసం కనబడుతోంది కాబట్టి, అవి రెండు కనీసం మూడు నాలుగు వందల యేండ్ల ముందుగా విడివడి ఉండాలి. ఆ రకంగా పూర్వ-తమిళం క్రీస్తు పూర్వం ఆరవ శతాబ్దంలో ప్రత్యేక భాషగా ఏర్పడి ఉండవచ్చు. కానీ దక్షిణ ద్రావిడ భాషలకూ, దక్షిణ-మధ్య ద్రావిడ భాషలకూ శబ్ద నిర్మాణంలోనూ, వాక్య నిర్మాణంలోనూ అనేక వ్యత్యాసాలు కనిపిస్తాయి. దక్షిణ ద్రావిడ భాషలైన తమిళ‌-కన్నడ లతో పోలిస్తే తెలుగు-కువి-గోండీ లలో కనిపించే వ్యత్యాసాలో కొన్ని--

  1. వర్ణవ్యత్యయం (metathesis): తెలుగు-కువి-గోండి భాషలలో మూల ద్రావిడ ధాతువులోని అచ్చు తరువాతి హల్లు పరస్పరం స్థానం మార్చుకుంటాయి. (ఉదా: వాడు < *అవన్ఱు, వీడు <*ఇవన్ఱు, రోలు < ఒరళ్ <*ఉరళ్)
  2. తెలుగులో బహువచన ప్రత్యయం- లు. తమిళాది దక్షిణ భాషల్లో ఇది -కళ్‌, -గళు.
  3. క్త్వార్థక క్రియలు తమిళాదుల్లో -తు -ఇ చేరటం వల్ల ఏర్పడుతాయి. తెలుగు-కువి-గోండి భాషలలో -చి, -సి చేరటం వల్ల ఏర్పడుతాయి. ఉదా: వచ్చి, చేసి, తెచ్చి, నిలిచి వరుసగా తమిళంలో వన్దు , కెయ్దు, తన్దు, నిన్ఱు.

పైన పేర్కొన్న లక్షణాలన్నీ దక్షిణ మధ్య ద్రావిడ భాషలన్నిటిలో ఉండి దక్షిణ ద్రావిడ భాషలో లేనివి. అంటే ఈ మార్పులన్నీ తెలుగు-కువి-గోండి ఒకే భాషగా కలిసి ఉన్న రోజులలో మూల దక్షిణ ద్రావిడ భాషనుండి విడిపోయిన తరువాత వచ్చిన మార్పులన్న మాట. అన్ని ముఖ్యమైన మార్పులు రావటానికి కనీసం 400-500 సంవత్సరాలు పట్టవచ్చు. అంటే తెలుగు-కువి-గోండి భాషలు దక్షిణ మధ్య ద్రావిడ ఉప శాఖగా క్రీస్తు పూర్వం 1100 సంవత్సరంలో మూల దక్షిణ ద్రావిడం నుండి విడిపోవచ్చు. ఇదే నిజమైతే క్రీస్తు పూర్వం 700-600 వరకే తెలుగు ఒక ప్రత్యేక భాషగా స్వయంప్రతిపత్తిని కలిగి ఉండవచ్చునని మనం ఊహించవచ్చు. క్రీస్తు పూర్వం ఏడవ శతాబ్దానికి చెందిన ఐతరేయ బ్రహ్మణం ఆంధ్ర జాతిని ప్రత్యేక జాతిగా పేర్కొనడం ఈ లెక్కతో సరిపోతుంది కూడా!


ఈ రకమైన కాలనిర్ణయం సాపేక్ష కాలమానాల (relative chronology) మీద ఆధారపడ్డదే కానీ పద, ధాతు వ్యాప్తి గణాంకాల (lexicostatistics) మీద ఆధారపడ్డది కాదు. ద్రావిడ భాషల పూర్వచరిత్ర పై ఇంకా పరిశోధనలు ఇతోధికంగా జరిగితే గాని తెలుగు భాషా జనన కాలనిర్ణయాన్ని నిష్కర్షగా చెప్పలేం.


[మార్చు] క్రీ.పూ. 28 నుండి క్రీ.త. 500 వరకు (అజ్ఞాత యుగం)

క్రీ.పూ. 500 - క్రీ..త. 500 మధ్య కాలంలో జరిగిన జైన బౌద్ధ మతోన్నతులు, పతనాలు అప్పటి సాహిత్యంపై గాఢమైన ప్రభావం కలిగి ఉండాలని చరిత్ర కారుల అభిప్రాయం. ఈ కాలానికి సబంధించిన కొన్ని అభిప్రాయాలు ఇలా ఉన్నాయి.

  • ఇప్పటికి తెలుగు భాష లిపి ప్రత్యేకంగా (బ్రాహ్మీ లిపినుండి వేరుగా) అభివృద్ధి అయిన తార్కాణాలు లేవు. "లిపికి ముందే సారస్వతము ఉండవచ్చును గాని అది కేవలం గ్రామ్య పదములో, వీరుల పాటలో, యక్షగానములో, మోహపుం గాసట బీసట యల్లికలో యై శృతి పరంపరాగతములై యుండును. లిపి మూలమున వాఙ్మయము విస్తారముగా వర్ధిల్లుటకు వీలున్నది. అందునను తెనుగున వాఙ్మయము లిపి నిర్మాణానంతరమే ఆరంభమై యుండును"[4]. కనుక ఈ కాలంలో తెలుగు సారస్వతం లేదనే భావించవచ్చును.
  • శాతవాహనుల కాలంలో తెలుగు ప్రజా భాషయే గాని సారస్వత భాష కాదు, పండిత భాష కాదు. ఆనాటి రాజభాష ప్రాకృతము. పండిత భాష సంస్కృతము. కనుక తెలుగు సాహిత్యం అభివృద్ధి కావడానికి పెద్దగా ప్రోత్సాహం లభించకపోయి ఉండవచ్చును.
  • బౌద్ధ జైన మతాలు విలసిల్లిన కాలలో ఎంతో కొంత సాహిత్యం లిఖితంగా కాని, మౌఖికంగా గాని ఉండి ఉండాలి. అయితే తరువాత విజృంభించిన శంకరవాదము, వీరశైనం కాలంలో మతోద్రేకాల కారణంగా బౌద్ధ జైన మత సంస్థల నాశనంతో పాటు ఎంతో సారస్వతం కూడా దగ్ధమైయుండవచ్చును. మతోద్రేకము ఎంతకైనా దారి తీయగలదు. కాకుంటే నన్నయ భారతం వంటి ఉద్గ్రంధం ఒక్కమారు ఆకసంనుండి ఊడిపడదు కదా? జైనపండితులు ఆ సమయంలో కన్నడ దేశానికి తరలిపోయి ఉండవచ్చును. [4]
  • ప్రాచీనాంధ్ర వాఙ్మయం లభించకున్నాగాని పూజ్యపాదుడు, పంపడు, మోళిగయ్య, నాగార్జునుడు, భీమకవి మొదలైన తెలుగువారు కన్నడ సాహిత్యానికి చేసిన సేవలను బట్టి చూస్తే తెలుగు భాషలో సాహిత్య పరంపర ఉండదనుకోవడం అసహజంగా కనిపిస్తుంది. ఆంధ్రులు కవులుగా నున్నయెడల ఆంధ్రమున కవిత్వము లేదనుట ఆశ్చర్యం. అయితే అప్పటిమత ఘర్షణలలో "విజయం" సాధించిన స్థానిక బ్రాహ్మణులకు సంస్కృతమే ఆదరణీయంగా ఉండేది గనుక తెలుగు లిఖిత సాహిత్యం పూర్తిగా నిరాదరణకు గురై ఉండవచ్చును.[4]
క్రీ.పూ. 28

పూజ్యపాదుడనే కన్నడ(ఆంధ్ర)కవి కాణ్వ వ్యాకరణం గురించి ప్రస్తావించాడు. కాణ్వుడు క్రీ.పూ. 28వ సంవత్సరపువాడని, ఆంధ్రుడని పరిశోధకుల అభిప్రాయం. అప్పటికి జైనమే ప్రబలంగా ఉన్నందున ఆనాటి సాహిత్యం జైన సాహిత్యం కావచ్చునని, కనుక కాణ్వ వ్యాకరణం తెలుగు భాషకు సంబంధించినది కావలెనని కాళ్ళకూరు నారాయణరావు అభిప్రాయం. అందుకనే క్రీ.పూ.28 నుండి ఒక యుగంగా ఆ రచయిత పరిగణించాడు.[4]. అంటే కొన్ని రచనలు అప్పటికే తెలుగులో ఉండి ఉండాలని, తరువాత బ్రాహ్మణ మతదౌర్జన్యాల సమయంలో అవి నష్టమయ్యాయని అనుకోవచ్చును. వేగినాడు వీడిపోవుచున్న జైనులతోపాటు అప్పటికున్న తెలుగు సాహిత్యంకూడా ఆంధ్రావనిని వీడిపోయిందని ఆ రచయిత భావించాడు[10]. పూర్వాంధ్రము "తెళుగు"గా మార్పులను చెందియుండవచ్చును.

క్రీ.శ. 1వ శతాబ్దం

క్రీ.శ. 1వ శతాబ్ధిలో గుణాఢ్యుడు పైశాచీ ప్రాకృత భాషలో బృహత్కథ అనే పెద్ద కథా కావ్యం వ్రాశాడు. అందులో పైఠాన్ నగరంలో జరిగిన సంవాదంలో అతను సంస్కృత, ప్రాకృత, దేశ్య భాషలను పరిహరించినట్లు ఉన్నది. ఆ దేశ్య భాష ఏదో స్పష్టంగా తెలియడంలేదు కాని అప్పటికి ఆధునిక మహారాష్ట్ర భాష ఏర్పడలేదు. పైఠాన్ అప్పటి ఆంధ్ర సామ్రాజ్యానికి ఒక రాజధానిగా ఉండేది. కనుక ఆ దేశ్యభాష తెలుగు అనుకోవడానికి అవకాశం ఉంది.[5]

క్రీ.శ. 1వ శతాబ్ధిలోనే హాలుడు గాధా సప్తశతి అనే ప్రాకృత కావ్యాన్ని సంకలనం చేశాడు. ఆ గాధలను రచించిన కొందరు ఆంధ్రులై యుండడంవల్లనేమో అందులో కొన్ని తెలుగు పదాలు కనిపిస్తున్నాయి. - అత్తా, పాడి, పొట్ట, పిలుఆ (పిల్ల), కరణి, బోణ్డీ (పంది), మోడి, కులుఞ్చిఊణ వంటివి.

క్రీ.శ. 1వ శతాబ్దం నుండి 3వ శతాబ్దం వరకు నిర్మాణం జరిగిన అమరావతీ స్తూపంలో ఒక రాతి పలక మీద నాగబు అనే తెలుగు పదం ("నాగంబు" రూపాంతరం) కనిపిస్తున్నది. అది ఒక వాక్యంలో భాగంగా కాక వేరుగా ఉంది. మనకు తెలిసినంతలో శాసనపరమైన మొదటి తెలుగు పదం ఇదే

క్రీ.శ. 200 - 500

శాతవాహనుల తరువాత ఏలిన ఇక్ష్వాకులు (210 - 300), బృహత్పలాయనులు (300 - 350), అనందగోత్రులు (290 - 620), శాలంకాయనులు, విష్ణుకుండినులు (400 - 600) , పల్లవులు (260 - 400 - 550) కాలానికి చెందిన శాసనాలు అన్నీ సంస్కృత, ప్రాకృత భాషలలోనే ఉన్నాయి. కాని వాటిలో తెలుగు భాషలోనివి అనిపించే పేర్లు, పదాలు, ప్రత్యయాలు కనిపిస్తున్నాయి - ఊరు, పర(పఱ్ఱ), కొన్ఱ (కొండ), చెరువు, వంటి పదాలతో ముగిసేవి - ఉదాహరణకు వ్యక్తుల పేర్లు - గోలశర్మ, కొట్టిశర్మ, దొడ్డి స్వామి; గ్రామాల పేర్లు - కురువాడ, చిన్నపురి, చెఞ్చెరువు, తెల్లవల్లి, పెరువాటము వంటివి. దీనినిబట్టి ఆ కాలానికే ఈ ధ్వనులు ఉన్న ద్రావిడ భాష (తెలుగు అనుకొందాము) వాడుకలో ఉన్నట్లు తెలుస్తున్నది.[5]


కాళ్ళకూరు నారాయణరావు అభిప్రాయంలో పూర్వాంధ్రభాష (తెళుగు) లక్షణాలు ఇవి కావచ్చును[4] -

  1. ఆర్యావర్తంలో సామ్రాజ్యం స్థాపించి సప్తశతివంటి ప్రాకృత గ్రంధాలు వ్రాసిన "కర్ల తెల్లంగు" రాజుల మాతృభాష కనుక శుద్ధ సంస్కృతంకంటే ప్రాకృత పదాలే ఎక్కువగా ఉండవచ్చును.
  2. అప్పటికి బౌద్ధ జైన ప్రాబల్యమే తెలుగు సీమలో అధికం గనుక సారస్వతం కూడా వారిదే అయిఉండవచ్చును.
  3. అటువంటి పూర్వాంధ్రం నేటి ఆంధ్రంగా మారేసరికి 14,814 తత్సమ శబ్దాలు చేరాయి. ఉన్న 12,337 దేశ్య పదాలలో తద్భవాలు 2,000. తురక ఇంగ్లీషు పదాలు 1,500. రూపములు మారి వికృతి చెందిన దేశ్యములే అనిపించేవి దాదాపు 4,000. కనుక శుద్ధ దేశ్యపదాలు 4,000 - 5,000 మధ్య ఉండవచ్చును. ఈ నాలుగు వేల పదాలు లోక వ్యవహారానికి చాలు.

సింధు లోయ నాగరికత లిపి ఇంతవరకు సరిగా చదువబడలేదు. వేదసూత్ర వాఙ్మయం కేవలం మౌఖికమో, లేక అక్షర బద్ధం కూడా అయిందో తెలియరావడంలేదు. కనుక అశోకుని శాసనాలలో కనిపించే మౌర్యలిపియే భారతీయ భాషలన్నిటికి మాతృక అనిపిస్తున్నది. అందులోనుండే తెలుగు అక్షరాలు రూపొందినాయనిపిస్తుంది.[11] కుబ్బీరకుని భట్టిప్రోలు శాసనము, అశొకుని ఎఱ్ఱగుడిపాడు (జొన్నగిరి) గుట్టమీది శాసనము ఆంధ్ర ప్రదేశ్ ప్రాంతంలో లభించే మొదటి వ్రాతలుగా భావిస్తున్నారు. వాటిలోని భాష ప్రాకృతము, లిపి బ్రాహ్మీలిపి.


తరువాత అమరావతిలోని నాగబు అనే పదము (క్రీ.శ. 1వ శతాబ్ది) , విక్రమేంద్రవర్మ చిక్కుళ్ళ సంస్కృత శాసనంలోని "విజయరాజ్య సంవత్సరంబుళ్" (క్రీ.శ. 6వ శతాబ్ది) మనకు కనిపిస్తున్న మొదటి తెలుగు పదాలు. నాగార్జునకొండ వ్రాతలలో కూడ తెలుగు పదాలు కనిపిస్తాయి. ఇవన్నీ ప్రాకృత శాసనాలు లేదా సంస్కృత శాసనాలు. కనుక తెనుగు అప్పటికి జనసామాన్యంలో ధారాళమైన భాషగా ఉన్నదనడానికి ఆధారాలు లేవు. ఆరవ శతాబ్ది తరువాత బ్రాహ్మీలిపినే కొద్ది మార్పులతో తెలుగువారు, కన్నడంవారు వాడుకొన్నారు. అందుచేత దీనిని "తెలుగు-కన్నడ లిపి" అని పరిశోధకులు అంటారు. [11]


6,7 శతాబ్దాలలో పల్లవ చాళుక్య సంఘర్షణల నేపధ్యంలో రాయలసీమ ప్రాంతం రాజకీయంగా చైతన్యవంతమయ్యింది. ఈ దశలో రేనాటి చోడులు సప్తసహస్ర గ్రామ సమన్వితమైన రేనాడు (కడప, కర్నూలు, చిత్తూరు జిల్లాలు) పాలించారు. తెలుగు భాష పరిణామంలో ఇది ఒక ముఖ్యఘట్టం. [7] వారి శాసనాలు చాలావరకు తెలుగులో ఉన్నాయి. వాటిలో ధనంజయుని కలమళ్ళ శాసనం (కడప జిల్లా కమలాపురం తాలూకా) మనకు లభిస్తున్న మొదటి పూర్తి తెలుగు శాసనంగా చరిత్రకారులు భావిస్తున్నారు. ఇది క్రీ.శ. 575 కాలందని అంచనా. అంతకుముందు శాసనాలలో చెదురు మదురుగా తెలుగు పదాలున్నాయి గాని సంపూర్ణమైన వాక్యాలు లేవు.[11]


ఆ తరువాత జయసింహవల్లభుని విప్పర్ల శాసనము క్రీ.శ. 641 సంవత్సరానికి చెందినది. 7,8, శతాబ్దులలోని శాసనాలలో ప్రాకృత భాషా సంపర్కము, అరువాతి కాలంలో సంస్కృత భాషా ప్రభావం అధికంగా కానవస్తాయి. 848 నాటి పండరంగుని అద్దంకి శాసనములో ఒక తరువోజ పద్యమూ, తరువాత కొంత వచనమూ ఉన్నాయి. 934 నాటి యుద్ధమల్లుని బెజనాడ శాసనములో ఐదు సీస పద్యాలున్నాయి. 1000 ప్రాంతమునాటిదని చెప్పబడుతున్న విరియాల కామసాని గూడూరు శాసనములో మూడు చంపకమాలలు, రెండు ఉత్పల మాలలు వ్రాయబడ్డాయి.[5] వీటి ఆధారాల కారణంగా నన్నయకు ముందే పద్య సాహిత్యం ఉండి ఉండాలని నిశ్చయంగా తెలుస్తున్నది. కాని లిఖిత గ్రంధాలు మాత్రం ఇంతవరకు ఏవీ లభించలేదు.
